History of Islam, Part 4 of 5: Partisans of Ali

History of Islam, Part 4 of 5: Partisans of Ali

Support CaspianReport through Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/CaspianReport BAKU - In the previous three episodes of the History of Islam, we described the first three Caliphs and their characteristics. We also discussed their most notable accomplishments and the ways in which they ruled the Caliphate. Abu Bakr, the wise community leader and the founder of the Caliphate, had died from a fever. Umar, the military thinker and the founder of Islamic jurisprudence, was stabbed in the stomach by a mentally disturbed Sassanid slave. And Uthman, the merchant, and the builder, was beaten to death in his study room by fellow Muslims. It was then Ali’s turn as Caliph, making him the fourth to take the title. However, Ali’s future looked bleak at best. Ever since the dispute between Ali and Abu Bakr over the succession of Muhammad, which we discussed in Part 1, Ali had gained a fiercely loyal following. And despite Ali’s allegiance and loyalty to the first three Caliphs, a large group of Muslims still considered Ali as the only chosen and legitimate successor of Muhammad. According to Shia scholars, during the rule of the previous Caliphs, Ali’s family was harassed, a portion of their property was seized, and one instance even resulted in the miscarriage and death of his wife Fatima. However, Sunni scholars say that the allegations regarding the seized property were made-up and that the miscarriage and death of Fatima was an accident. What we know for certain is that, despite everything, Ali remained a strong supporter of unity amongst Muslims and continued to advise the Caliphs on a variety of political and religious subjects. For example, Ali advised Caliph Umar to set the First Hijra, the migration of Muhammad from Mecca to Medina, as the beginning of the Islamic lunar calendar. In his spare time, Ali held sermons and lectures. Over the years, he gained more and more followers, until eventually they became known as the Party of Ali, or the Partisans for short, which in Arabic translates to the Shiites. The Partisans had proclaimed their leader as the Imam. If the mainstream Sunni Muslim community had the Caliph, then the Shiites had the Imam. Therefore, the meaning of Imam is different for Sunni and Shia Muslims. Aside from this difference of titles, there were no cultural or religious differences between Muslims at the time, and there were no sects, cults or branches. More importantly, there was no schism - at least, not in the beginning or in the open. Michael: You know what, I never studied dancing before. It always became natural for me. Jesse: Michael, where did the moonwalk come from? Michael: The moonwalk is a dance I would love to take credit for but I can’t. Because I have to be completely honest here. These black children in the ghettos are, they have the most phenomenal rhythm of anybody on the Earth. I’m not joking. I learned, I get a lot of ideas from watching these black children. They have perfect rhythm. From just riding through Harlem, I remember in the early, you know, late 70’s early 80’s, I would see these kids dancing on the street and I would see these kids doing these, uh sliding backwards kinda like an illusion dancing I call it. I took a mental picture of it. A mental movie of it. I went into my room upstairs in Encino, and I would just start doing the dance, and create and perfect it. But it definitely started within the black culture. No doubt. That’s where it comes from. Jesse: Did you ever watch Don Cornelius Soul Train? Michael: Oh I love that show. Are you kidding? Of course I did. http://www.allmichaeljackson.com/interviews/jessejackson.html 【Oprah Winfrey - Interview (1993)】 Oprah :Where did the moonwalk come from actually? Michael : Well, the Moonwalk came from these beautiful children, the black kids who live in the ghettos, you know, the inner cities, who are brilliant, that just have that natural talent for dancing any of these new - the running man - any of these dances. They come up with these dances, all I did was enhance the dance. https://youtu.be/qAdLLxW_CWA 【『Moonwalk 』 (1988) Page 210】 I had been practicing the Moonwalk for some time, and it dawned on me in our kitchen [on the night before the taping] that I would finally do the Moonwalk in public on Motown 25. Now the Moonwalk was already out on the street by this time, but I enhanced it a little when I did it. It was born as a breakdance step, a 'popping' type of thing that black kids had created dancing on the street corners in the ghetto. Black people are truely innovative dancers. They create many of the new dances, pure and simple. So I said, 'This is my chance to do it,' and I did it. These three kids taught it to me. They gave me the basics and I had been doing it a lot in private. I had practiced it together with certain other steps. All I was really sure of was that on the bridge to 'Billie Jean' I was going to walk backward and forward at the same time, like walking on the moon.
