http://www.garrettgibbons.com (director) http://garrettgibbons.com/run-away/ (production info) http://www.camilarecchio.com (music) http://www.danceshortfilms.com (more dance short films) “Run Away” is a short film based around the dance known as Rumba, performed in the International Latin Ballroom style. The creation of this short film began when I heard “Don’t," a beautiful and haunting piece of music by my Camila Recchio. I immediately asked her for permission to use it for a dance piece, then began talking to dancers. Natalya and Umario ended up finding inspiration in the song, and after I gave them a few general story beats and concepts and images that I wanted to include, they choreographed the movement and developed the story between the characters. “Run Away” has many themes, which may mean different things to different people at different times. To me right now, it’s about the death of a relationship. It shows the tragedy of a once-thriving friendship that is now dead at the core. In many ways, this short film deals with similar themes and visual motifs as my short film “Time Withers” (2011) (choreographed by Elisha Thompson), but while that film ends on a hopeful and inspiring note, this one is deeply tragic. This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Maria Phalime followed her dreams and went into medicine. After a “hellish” experience throughout her brief time as a doctor working in public hospitals, she followed her heart and left medicine. Writing about that experience in a memoir titled ‘Postmortem, the Doctor Who Walked Away’ has been a cathartic process for her. She shares thoughts on "what becomes available when we have the courage to let go" in this deeply personal TEDxJohannesburg 2014 talk. Maria Phalime is a medical doctor and award-winning author based in Cape Town. After qualifying in 1999 she practiced medicine for four years before deciding to leave the profession. In 2012 Maria was the recipient of the inaugural City Press Nonfiction Award for her memoir, Postmortem – The Doctor Who Walked Away. In 2013 her novel for teens, Second Chances, was the English language category winner of the Maskew Miller Longman Literature Awards.
