(9 Aug 2016) FOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBER: 4049574 LEAD IN: With the Olympics now underway, doctors are offering advice and facts about the Zika virus and how to avoid it. STORY-LINE: The Rio Olympics are finally underway. People have come from all over the world to celebrate sporting excellence. But this Olympics has been overshadowed by concern about the Zika virus. Zika is primarily transmitted to people through the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito, which also transmits chikungunya, dengue and yellow fever. Now tests carried out in Brazil show another mosquito, the Culex, may also transmit the virus. Research about Zika is still in its early stages. Doctors now say the virus can also be transmitted through sexual activity and has been detected in semen, blood, urine, amniotic fluids, saliva as well as body fluids found in the brain and spinal cord. Anyone who's been infected with Zika is being advised to practice safe sex using contraceptives. Pregnant women are advised to stay away, if possible, from areas where Zika is present. Although the Zika virus has been detected in breast milk, the World Health Organisation says there is currently no evidence that the virus is transmitted to babies through breastfeeding. The WHO is still recommending exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of a baby's life. The Zika virus often has mild symptoms, most commonly include a slight fever or rash, appearing a few days after a person is bitten by an infected mosquito. Many people won't display any symptoms, some may experience conjunctivitis, muscle and joint pain, and tiredness. The symptoms usually last from 2 to 7 days. Laboratory testing can confirm the presence of Zika virus in the blood. However, this diagnosis may not be reliable as the virus could cross-react with other viruses such as dengue, West Nile and yellow fever. Symptoms of the virus are usually treated with common pain and fever medicines, rest and plenty of water, but if the symptoms persist people should seek a doctor's advice. There is now a growing body of evidence from preliminary research to link Zika with more serious illnesses. The WHO reports there is scientific consensus that Zika virus is a cause of microcephaly and Guillain-Barré syndrome. Aedes mosquitoes are weak flyers and don't fly more than 400 metres (1,312 feet). However it may be possible for the mosquito to be transported from one place to another accidentally and introduce Zika virus to new areas. At least 15 people in the US have been diagnosed with Zika. The Centers for Disease Control is ordering the aerial spraying of the insecticide over parts of Miami. Everyone is advised to wear insect repellent containing DEET (diethyltoluamide), or IR 3535 or Icaridin. According to the WHO, these are also safe for use by pregnant women. Other recommended protective measures are wearing light-coloured clothes that cover as much of the body as possible, using physical barriers such mesh screens or treated netting on doors and windows as well as sleeping under mosquito nets, even when resting during the day.
