The Farm Aid 2011 Press Event was held the morning of August 13 at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park in Kansas City before the concert. At the event, Farm Aid President Willie Nelson was inducted into the National Agricultural Hall of Fame. "We want to recognize Mr. Nelson for his long commitment to America's family farmers and for the millions of dollars and enormous attention he has contributed to the devastating economic problems faced by this country's family farmers and their communities," said Cathi Hahner, Executive Director of the National Agricultural Center and Hall of Fame. Jim Hightower, national radio commentator, author, public speaker, humorist, and two-term Texas Agriculture Commissioner and populist agitator, moderated a discussion about the promise that family farmers offer our nation and the challenges that impede their progress. Participants included Farm Aid board members Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp, Neil Young and Dave Matthews, along with Farm Aid executive director Carolyn Mugar; Kansas cattle rancher and owner of Ranch Direct Foods, Mike Callicrate; farmer and founder of Good Natured Family Farms, Diana Endicott; and farmer and founder of Cultivate Kansas City, Katherine Kelly.

Willie Nelson is a co-founder and President of Farm Aid, along with co-founders and board members Neil Young, and John Mellencamp. The three agreed that family farmers were in dire need of assistance and decided to plan a concert for America. The show was put together in six weeks and was held on September 22, 1985 in Champaign, Illinois before a crowd of 80,000 people. It raised over $9 million for America's family farmers. Performers included Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, B.B. King, Loretta Lynn, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and many more.
